Flooring Installation in Geelong: What to ask before you book.

Most flooring problems aren’t about the product. They’re about the install.

We’ve walked into more than a few Geelong homes where a perfectly good floor was let down by an installer who rushed the prep work, and the homeowner had no way of knowing until the boards started lifting six months later. Here’s what actually separates a good install from a problem waiting to happen.

Subfloor Prep isn’t optional

Whatever’s underneath your new floor has to be flat, dry, and properly prepared before a single board or plank goes down. Skipping this step is the single biggest cause of flooring failure, squeaks, gaps, and lifting almost always trace back to subfloor issues, not the flooring product itself. Ask your installer directly what subfloor prep they’re including, and get it in writing.

Acclimatisation matters more than people think

Engineered timber and vinyl both need time in your home’s actual environment before installation, so the material can adjust to the room’s humidity and temperature. Skip this step in winter and you risk gaps; skip it before a hot Geelong summer and you risk buckling. A good installer builds this into the timeline, if yours doesn’t mention it, ask.

Engineered Timber vs Engineered Vinyl, which suits your home?

Engineered timber gives you the warmth and resale appeal of real timber with better stability than solid boards, which makes it a strong option for most Geelong homes. Engineered vinyl is more water-resistant and a better fit for bathrooms, laundries, and busy family homes where spills are part of daily life. Neither is automatically the right choice — it depends on the room.

Get it in writing

Before any flooring job starts in Geelong, you want clarity on: subfloor prep included or extra, acclimatisation timeline, expansion gap allowance around the perimeter, and what happens if uneven subfloor is discovered once the old flooring comes up (it often is).

We Supply. We Also Install.

Walkers runs Trade Centres in Geelong and Ballarat, plus our own Supply & Install division, so when you buy flooring through us, the people fitting it aren’t a mystery subcontractor three steps removed from the product. If you’re planning a flooring job in Geelong, talk to us before you book anyone.,
